Internal Competitions

Apart from the annual club championships we are currently running some internal club competitions based on a similar format to the postal league competitions. They are open to all members and probationary members free of charge and we award medals to winners and runners up.

Spring Rifle Competition

Like most shooters many of our members have spring powered air rifles in the cupboard that never seem to get used nowadays. There doesn't appear to be many competitions where these guns would be really competitive so we've formulated our own competition just for spring rifles (we include gas-rams as well)..

This competition is for any spring or gas-ram powered "recoiling" air rifle fitted with any sights. Shot over ten fortnightly rounds throughout the summer with each round consisting of one target at 25 yards and one at 45 yards. Shot sitting at the bench with the elbows only rested on the bench  - no sandbags or other supports.

The scoring for this competition is designed to give everyone an equal chance. Scores are the amount by which a shooter has exceeded (or not) their average. So if a shooter has an average of 150 and shoots 160 their score for that round is +10. Likewise If they shoot 145 their score would be -5. Averages are updated after every round so shooters are continually shooting against their own average. Not only has this proved to be successful in "levelling the playing field" it has led to a general improvement to shooter's averages.

50 metre Gallery Rifle Competition

Open to any pistol calibre rifle this is shot sitting at the bench with the elbows only rested on the bench. No sandbags or other support allowed. Shot over seven three-weekly rounds during the summer, each round consists of ten shots on a PL7 target (or PL8 centre) at 50 metres.

Antique/Historic Rifle

A number of members own and shoot antique rifles both original and reproductions. We trialled a competition for these arms in 2007 but the interest was poor. Therefore this event has been shelved until or unless interest picks up. It was designed for cartridge loading rifles (not being gallery rifles) made to a design before 1890, or reproductions "in the spirit of the original" and using any iron sights to a design available in 1890. The competition consisted of five monthly rounds of ten shots each at 50 metres. We would need a minimum of four interested shooters to run the event again. So if you have a suitable gun and would like to try this competition please speak with Maurice the Club Captain.
